first classes of 2013!

hello…

i’d like to give you some info on some upcoming classes for the new year…

a new monthly class has been added to my calendar; we’ll give it a try and see how it goes!

it’s called crop’n with tami and will be held on the 3rd or 4th Thursday of the month at Stamp Antonio. the first class is scheduled for thursday, january 24 from 10:30 to 1:30.

i’ve been asked about doing a class where i help you work on your own layouts, along the lines of an assisted crop, giving you layout and embellishment ideas. enough of you have asked enough times that i’ve decided to try out the idea for a new class for 2013.

i will bring my sketches for past photo-full and money $aving classes, as well as other sketch books and layout ideas for you to use. i will also bring supplies that will be free for use that may vary each month, like stamps and inks, spritzes, alphabets, etc.

although the class is “officially” 3 hours, you can remain and crop until Stamp Antonio closes at 6:00 as long as there is no other class scheduled on that particular day. the cost of the crop is $12. the longevity of this class will depend on attendance.

if you are interested in signing up, please call Stamp Antonio at 210-764-7900.

i have also scheduled a valentine’s day décor project – amoure décor – at Scrapbook N’ More on sunday, january 20 from 2:00 to 4:00. the project features Reminisce’s new line My Sweet Valentine

amoure decor collage

the project also features inks and more from Clearsnap and trinkets from my vintage and not so vintage stash! you can also check out the sample at Scrapbook N’ More. cost for this class is $25.

please call Scrapbook N’ More at 830-214-1690 to sign up or for more info; space for this class is very limited; so please call early!

i am poking around for “inspiration” for the next altered book class – i had my heart set on Valentine’s, but that may not pan out. i’m awaiting the sneak peek of graphic 45’s Secret Garden line; i haven’t done a spring/garden book yet!

i am also looking into hosting a fall retreat: classes by day, cropping by night with lodging and food included.

any input about these or future classes or the fall retreat, would be GREATLY appreciated! i am especially interested in hearing whether or not YOU would be interested in the retreat!

thanks for your interest!

i want to share an upcoming class project with you…

i’ve just finished up my newest altered book…

“sweet dreams of christmas”…

i’ve been working on it for days; trying to add all those special little touches that you have come to expect and using as MANY goodies from my vintage stash as possible!

here’s a peek at the latest book in my series of altered books and the third christmas themed book in the collection…

this class will be taught at Stamp Antonio; i will be working with them to set a date and time and will post all the details when available.

thanks for your interest!

the clock strikes again…

i taught the halloween tryptic “stroke of midnight” at scrapbook n’ more today; the attendees left with hands covered in alternating layers of glue, ink and feathers! but they also left with a halloween decor piece to display!

for those of you who missed it, guess what — you DIDN’T! due to requests, i will be teaching this same class again at Stamp Antonio on sunday, october 7. the date is set, but the time is TBA. it will be in the afternoon and run 4-4 1/2 hours.  i’ll post again as soon as the time is decided on.

i’ll only have 12 spots, so if you are interested, please sign up soon. this class is not hard, but there are lots of parts and pieces, so kits may be a challenge.

thanks!

alter with care…

i’ve been busy putting away my goodies from Canton and continuing to sort and stash some other vintage finds that have been sitting around.

just for grins, i decided to look up a few things on e-bay to see what they were selling for. imagine my surprise when i found this book, secrets of charm…

 — selling for between $100 and $500 depending on condition! mine is a first edition with the dust jacket!

another unexpected find came when i was sorting through a box of watch crystals i bought for $8. i found a rolex and several omega, seiko and bulova crystals, all of which i found selling for $10 to $25 EACH on e-bay…

i figure that if i can sell these few items, i’ll more than pay for my trip to Canton last week. making some BIG bucks on selling a few of my finds gives me an unexpected BOOST in my SPENDING budget to buy more! LOL!

i cringe whenever i see an altered art item using vintage patterns, i’ve sold hundreds of vintage patterns and some sell for $10 to $200 each depending on the design.

i personally prefer to use broken items for my altered art pieces. or to upcycle items that would just be considered “trash” or “junk”. when i do decide to work with vintage items that might still be useful or have some value, i like to check the internet to see what they might be selling for. pieces and parts, like the watch crystals, have gone UP in value instead of down. people who own or fix vintage watches have trouble finding vintage parts. so some parts for better companies are selling well. the box i purchased contained many “budget” crystals that don’t sell for much, so i will be using them!

i like to scan or photocopy book pages, pattern envelopes, leaflets, postcards or other ephemera to use in my projects; you can’t tell the difference between the images in most cases, and i can use the image over and over instead of just once. i’m also considering scanning pages of vintage anagram pieces, letters and numbers as they have been steadily rising in price. i used to be able to find boxes FULL of small letters for $2 and $3, now they are going for $20-$40 on e-bay! at that price, i can’t afford to use the originals in my classes, but scans of the pieces result in the same look for a lot less.

my feelings are that if an item has survived intact for 30, 40, 50 or more years, i don’t want to be the one to tear it up now! unless of course that is all it is good for!

so a word to the wise, CHECK FIRST, before you incorporate vintage items into your altered art. otherwise, your project may be costing you a FORTUNE!

altered book classes

i posted pics from the “by the sea” altered book class at Stamp Antonio on the Clearsnap Blog – you can see the post HERE

if you attended the class, but don’t see your pic – my apologies, i tried to get everyone!

during the class, i took a poll about themes for future altered books; there were some really good ideas… AND an overwhelming request for yet another Christmas book! which surprised me because i’ve already done TWO! but — if you REALLY want another one, i’m game to do it. i’ve been on a buying spree picking up lots of vintage goodies to use on it. i will be using the new NUTCRACKER SWEET line from Graphic 45. The “sugary” colors will lend itself to some feminine touches, so this book will differ from the other 2 Christmas books we’ve done.

i’m also working on some classes for holday gifts, and maybe something for fall. with all my new goodies from Canton, i’m anxious to USE THEM ALL!

there were still a few spaces left for my Halloween Tryptic Class at Scrapbook N’ More in New Braunfels this saturday. please call the store to sign up if you are interested.

thanks!

upcoming classes at stamp antonio…

as most of you probably know, stamp antonio will be MOVING at the end of june, you can get all the info on their website if you hadn’t heard: STAMP ANTONIO NEWSLETTER.

i am going to be scheduling 2 jewelry classes towards the end of july or maybe in early august at stamp antonio, so they will be in their NEW location by then! i’m excited to see what the new store will be like; especially since amy and carol want to put their own ”STAMP” on it! i’m sure it will be unique, artistic and inspiring!

here’s a sneak peek at the sample projects: the first class is ”dangle gal”…

and the other class is ”charmed – i’m sure”…

if you are interested in either of these classes, please check back to for dates and times.

i’d like to do more “guest teaching” starting in the fall, so if you would like me to come to your store, or would like to suggest a retreat in need of instructors, i’d love to hear about it {as long as it’s in texas – i’m not ready to go TOO far! LOL!}

UPDATED: valentine altered book class…

UPDATE: i was able to add a few more slots to this class over the weekend, and i think there are still 1 or 2 left. if you are interested, please call SCRAPBOOK 911 {210-492-1984} ASAP as i won’t be able to add any more spaces – my supplies have been exhausted!

also, i’ve decided to include a light lunch with this class – since it’s a WHOLE 5 hours and runs through lunch. i want you alert and HAPPY during the WHOLE class, so we’ll take a little break around lunch time. there won’t be time for you to leave, or order-in though, so hopefully you’ll like what we have!

for those of you who were wondering – i have decided to teach another altered book class next month. the book will be valentine themed and the class will be held at SCRAPBOOK 911 on february 13th from 10:00 to 3:00, and the price of the class will be 45.00.

here are some pics of the book; i’ll give you a peek at some of the details…

the book features papers by jenni bowlin, embellies by tim holtz and LOTS and LOTS of junque from my vintage stash of goodies!

space in this class is LIMITED and i won’t be able to add any more slots at a later date {like i did last time}, so please call the store to sign up if you are interested.

i have been kicking around the idea of offering a few altered book classes a year {maybe 3 or 4} - each one centered around a different holiday or season.  i think altered books are a really unique and fun thing to “decorate” with. and having done the Christmas book and now the Valentine’s book, i thought why not do some for the other major holidays? i think halloween would ESPECIALLY be fun! if you like this idea, please post a comment or drop me a note. these books take SO much time to design and even MORE time to prepare for {all the cutting and packing up the goodies} that i DON’T want to spend time designing more books if the interest is NOT there for them!

hope to hear from you! thanks… tami

sprays, spritzes and mists OH MY!

are you overwhelmed by the number of sprays, spritzes and mists that are out there for you to use on your paper projects?

do you wonder which product would be best to use on YOUR project?

do you just want to know what’s the difference between them?

well… i’m hoping i can help you out a bit with my side-by-side comparisons of 3 of the most popular products out there: SMOOCH SPRITZ, MAYA MIST and GLIMMER MIST.

Smooch Spritz, made by CLEARSNAP is the newest “spray” -type product to be introduced… the colors are very vibrant and deep, and you get a lot of coverage and color with each spritz. each one also has plenty of bling and shimmer too and they come in small glass bottles that make it easy to tuck them in with your “transportable” supplies for crops and such.

Maya Mist , made by MAYA ROAD, is another spray that gives a nice application of color. is is really good on chipboard. the sprays come mostly in a matte finish, but there are a few metallics, as well as sprays in metallics and irridescent colors that you can layer over the matte colors. they come in plastic bottles about the size of an acrylic paint bottle.

Glimmer Mist, made by TATTERED ANGELS,  provides your project with a fine layer of shimmer and a kiss of color. these mists are the sheerest of all 3 sprays. these sprays are good for your vintage-inspired projects when you want a “shabby chic” look.

for my comparisons, i selected an assortment of paper products to test: a manilla tag, white cardstock, text weight printed paper, chipboard and a white paper flower. i sprayed three sets of these supplies using Smooch Spritz in Emerald Sprinkle, Maya Mist in pink and Glimmer Mist in Walnut Gold.

i wanted to see how well the mists performed in these areas: coverage, color and ease of use. i also wanted to see if i had trouble with the sprayers or warping of the materials.

here’s photos of the tests:

i found that the Smooch Spritzes and Maya Mists gave the most even coverage, with the Smooch Spritz having the advantage of a more vivid color. the Glimmer Mists can “spit” a bit, but i think that adds to the “shabby” appeal. all 3 were pretty easy to use, and i didn’t have any trouble with clogging.

the cardstock and printed papers sprayed with Smooch Spritz stayed the flattest, both when they were wet and dry. the papers sprayed with Maya Mist curled a bit, but didn’t really warp, the papers sprayed with Glimmer Mist warped.

each of these products has +’s and -’s… it all depends on what your project is and what effect you want.  if you want color, coverage and shimmer in a portable package – then try Smooch Spritz, if you want a matte finish, try Maya Road, and if you want a ditressed “kissed by angels” look, then try glimmer mist.

i hope this little demo has helped answer SOME of your questions!

if you have more, drop me a line and i’ll try my best to find you an answer!
