CHA inspired…

hello! today i’d like to share my monthly design team project for Clearsnap…

it’s a MixEd MEdiA Altered Canvas that was inspired by Summer CHA. I showed a sneak peek of the project last month on the Clearsnap Facebook page, and now, it’s ALL done and ready to share!

For me, CHA is always an amazing source of inspiration. And with this year’s MixEd MEdiA theme tying in with the New Donna Salazar MixEd MEdiA iNX, all kinds of fresh ideas for new projects came to mind.

The CHA display that I found most fascinating this year was the Mixed Media Fashion Show where over a dozen EXTREMELY talented designers used various materials to sculpt fantasy dresses.

So I took what I saw and gathered up some souvenirs of my CHA trip; receipts, baggage claim checks, airline tickets, dinner receipts, notes I made and more. I also rounded up a few of the stamps I had used in the classes I taught at CHA. Then I raided my hoard of vintage “junque” and collected some more Clearsnap products to use. All were combined into one piece of MixEd MEdiA aRt

The background is a flat canvas that was first “painted” with layers of the Donna Salazar MixEd MEdiA iNX. The inks blend BEAUTIFULLY and they are so mayo-like super creamy, that the coverage is AWESOME! You can use the Stylus and Blender Tip to apply and blend the inks, but I must confess to cover and blend large areas, or to add a little touch of ink, I like to use my FINGERS! In my opinion art should be a little MESSY!

Circles of script were stamped in Black ink while the canvas was still “wet”, then, the entire piece was sprinkled with and embossed using Clear Embossing Powder. Scrolls and words were added and embossed in Sterling Silver. Finally, flowers were stamped using the MixEd MEdiA iNX and embosed in Opalescent Clear and finished with vintage button centers…

The wood dress form was from KaiserCraft; they were using it for a make & take during CHA and were kind enough to give me one to use on the blog. The stand portion was inked using Jasmine MixEd MEdiA iNX, then stamped in Black with a script stamp and embossed using Clear Embossing Powder, while the base was inked in Black…

The body was covered with a woven piece that was made by cutting pieces of my black and white “souvenirs” into thin strips and weaving them together. The piece was fitted to the mannequin, then trimmed to fit. MixEd MEdiA iNX in Honey and Chiffon were rubbed on to add some color…

To further embellish the dress form, a vintage junque-jewelry rhinestone piece was adhered as a choker, and paper roses and leaves were made from more ticket and receipt pieces that had been tinted using Smooch Spritz. After they were formed, they were rubbed with MixEd MEdiA iNX in Honey…

The two tiered skirt has a canvas fabric overskirt and vintage pattern piece underskirt. The canvas was first stamped and embossed with a Damask pattern using Top Boss Tinted Embossing Pad and Opalescent Clear Embossing Powder. Then it was spritzed with multiple colors of Smooch Spritz. The tissue underskirt was stamped in the same pattern but with Wicked Black Archival Dye Ink, then it too was sprayed with several Smooch Spritzes, but this time in brighter shades. The canvas was gathered and adhered using Beacon 3-in-1 glue – which is PERFECT for use with Mixed Media projects as it can be used to adhere a multitude of different surfaces. Scor-Tape was used to gather and adhere the underskirt…

The ribbon trim was made by dyeing vintage seam binding using Smooch Spritz, then crumpling the ribbon tightly in a napkin while it was still wet. After the ribbon dried, it was adhered using Scor-Tape…

Since I plan to display this piece in my studio, the words chosen were my favorite “3 I’s of Crafting” — Inspiration, Imagination and Innovation. The words were made by stamping the letters in Wicked Black Dye Ink, with several different alphabet stamp sets, on a piece of file folder that had been bLinGeD up with Smooch Spritz . The letters were cut apart and slightly “crumpled”. Then they were distressed using Leather MixEd MEdiA iNX applied with a Stylus and Blender Tip…

The wood disc was rubbed with several colors of MixEd MEdiA iNX, then stamped with a damask pattern in the Chiffon Ink. A button embellished with a vintage piece of junque-jewelry served to hyphenate the word…

and now for my recap:

new companies i liked…

The Paper Element, they had a nice variety of new collections,  and i really liked their Hot Chocolate line – it would be great for “coffee” projects or layouts. their new lines are not posted on the website yet, but some of the older ones are REALLY great so take a look!

Mollie and Mac, they only had ONE collection, but i REALLY liked it! it had a vintage feel in very mixable dark reds and blues.

TaDa, i liked the colors and designs of their collections, and i really liked their diecut papers – they had some really unique styles!

my show favorites…

Prima - they are NOT just a “flower” company any more! this booth had a FABULOUS WOW factor! they had it all – great papers, great embellies, trims, projects, and of course more flowers than you can shake a stick at! LOL! they also have a new hybrid line for those of you who digi! i found a LOT to look at and a LOT to love from Prima!

Graphic 45 - i just can’t say enough good things about this company! i LOVE, LOVE, LOVE their lines! being a vintage fanatic, this company is right up my alley! their booth was decked out to the 9′s with ABSOLUTELY STUNNING vignettes filled with AMAZING projects! their new lines BOTANICABELLA and PLAYTIME PAST are just GORGEOUS! i can’t wait to get my hands on some!

Maya Road - another exciting booth, i asked jessica to show me the new products and she walked me around the ENTIRE booth! there was TONS of new stuff! i really liked their MAYA MISTS, DIECUT SHEER SHEETS and new CLEAR RIBBONS too! The MAYA MISTS come in gorgeous MATTE colors and look amazing on chipboard. there are also some shimmery shades – silver, gold and copper that you can use alone or on top of the other colors. the DIECUT SHEER SHEETS are perfect to use as masks on chipboard or paper when using the MAYA MISTS, or you could cut them apart and use them on a layout! i don’t see all the new things on their website yet, but i’m sure they will be updating soon!

Scenic Route - always one of my favorites – i just LOVE their colors and styles! i particularly like the new SONOMA line. i liked the mix of somewhat contemporary large print papers with small print vintage style papers.

October Afternoon - i didn’t see the new lines on their website yet, but i’m sure they will be updating soon! having 2 BOYS, i’m always on the outlook for BOY lines! i found lines i liked at OA, and a lot of the colors in their collections work for BOY layouts too!

Glitz – i LOVE the pop-graphic vibe going on at glitz! all those fabulous bright colors bouncing off your basic black and white! LOVE IT!

Piggy Tales – i liked a lot of their new lines, especially ITSY BITSY SPIDER, LOVE the color combo of yellow, black, white and lime green! (didn’t see the new lines up yet!)

Jenni Bowlin - i thought her new CREPE PAPER RIBBONS were fun and unique!

Ranger - who can ever have enough STICKLES! i like the new ones that Ranger has introduced in the Distress colors!

Luxe – LOVE the new SIMPLY LUXE line, as the name inplies it is a simple line – but it is SIMPLY FABULOUS! great basic colors in FAB designs to mix and match!

Crate Paper – another one of my must have lines!

Pink Paislee - LOVE the PIXEE STICKS! new glitters!

Webster’s Pages - LOVE their new CALENDAR PAGES, they are gorgeous! they come in 12 X 12 and 6 X 6.

Reminisce - their new ENCHANTED AUTUMN line used HOLOGRAPHIC paper that is TOTALLY unique! i didn’t see anything even close to it at the show. you HAVE to see this line in person, photos don’t do it justice. you can see a little bit of the HOLO effect if you look at my CHA projects, the pics of the party set capture it best. i also love their new school line MAKING THE GRADE, this one has it ALL, papers, embellies, 3D stickers, alpha stickers, 12 X 12 stickers and MORE!

trends i spotted…

MORE BLING! bling is BIG! most of the lines now have some type of specialty papers, glittered, shimmery, embossed, etc. GCD introduced new double sided shimmer papers, Chatterbox had all kinds of BLINGY papers, Reminisce had the new HOLO paper in their Enchanted Autumn line and their FROSTED line is literally dripping with glittery effects!

back to basics – at least color-wise, i spotted several companies who introduced lines with “solid” colors, that isn’t to say they didn’t have patterns to them, just that they were mainly one color with either black and white elements or some type of BLINGY element! look for them with Chatterbox, Doodlebug, Pebbles Inc and Luxe.

i’ve also included a few photos from our outings in Chicago, you can see them HERE!

well, i guess that’s about it, i hope you have enjoyed my views from CHA!!!

note: because i’ve seen it asked about and commented on in message boards…

i took a LOT of these photos before the show opened each day, so that is why there aren’t crowds or a lot of people in the background. i was also VERY patient; and for those photos taken when the show was open, i waited for “clear shots”!

thanks for the great response to this post!

CHICAGO!!!

i’m in chicago! i got here late this afternoon. i got in too late to do anything but take a quick peek around the CHA floor. i didn’t have my pass and registration had already closed, so security was nice enough to give me a lift to the clearsnap booth on their little cart to drop off some projects. i had to make a quick grab at the pole on the back to keep from falling off – that little thing is FAST! LOL! i was too busy trying to stay on the thing to get a good look at anything!

i went to the sei presentation with the gals from scrapbook 911. sei has lots of great new lines – lots of specialty papers – flocking, varnish and glitter oh my! jenny will be updating the scrapbook 911 blog with notes from the show and details about what items will be arriving at the store soon! they are having a promotion on their blog, so be sure to check it out!

we went to white palace grill for dinner, they were featured on diners, drive-ins and dives – for those of you who watch food network, the food was great! the menu was enormous! just good ol’ diner food with a nice homey atmosphere.

well i guess i better get to bed, i’m doing the make & takes at the clearsnap booth tomorrow! my plan is to get up early, get into the show and take some pics before the show opens – we’ll see if i get up on time! LOL!
