Happy New Year!!!

happy new year!!!

have you been thinking about what 2012 holds in store for you? made any resolutions?

i’ve been giving the upcoming 2012 a lot of thought… what are my priorities, what direction do i want the next 12 months to take, what changes do i want to make — out with the old, in with the new!

the rolling of the clock and calendar to a fresh new year always gets me in the “clean slate” frame of mind, at least for a week or two. i wish i knew how to make that feeling last long enough to really MAKE THOSE CHANGES that seemed so important on 01/01 of each new year!

i haven’t made any plans yet that i would apply a coat of sealer to, i thought i’d have things all mapped out this year, but alas – i’m a procrastinator at heart! why do today what you can easily put off until tomorrow? unfortunately, a few years of that mantra has put me way behind in some personal goals!

so, i better hurry up and FOCUS on the upcoming year, IT WON’T wait for me to figure it out; those days just fly by!

some of the “professional” changes i’ve been thinking about making – in order to get to some of those personal goals are:

— teach my “regular” monthly classes – photoFULL and money $aving $ketches bi-monthly instead.

— schedule a “specialty class” like an altered book, mini album or decor project, once every quarter.

— try teaching a “cluster” of classes – a day where 2 or 3 different classes are taught, twice a year.

another idea i’ve had for awhile, is to get several regional instructors together and plan a weekend of classes.

i’d love your input about these ideas because right now, that’s all they are! you can post a comment here, or click on my “contact me” link at the top of the page and drop me an e-mail.

i know i need to change things up in order to quit running from class to class and project to project. i keep thinking things will slow down “next week”, “next month”, “next year”, but the fact is they HAVEN’T!

i am happy with all the freelance design work i’ve been doing; it is something i enjoy very much. but it takes up a LARGE chunk of my time. i just need to admit i need to change up the pace. i can’t clone myself, and i have found that i DO occasionally need to eat, drink and sleep! LOL! so some changes will have to be made this year. i need to find a happy medium between the personal and professional me!

but enough of that! it’s time for the party! the ringing in of 2012!

we went over to my mom’s house to consume large quantities of things that are bad for you and you are supposed to stay away from under “normal” circumstances. we also whiled away the hours til midnite by playing games – something that we have done many a new year.

here are some photos of my “lovely” family…

they are all shown modeling the “party like it’s 1912″ crown i made as a project for the Clearsnap Blog - aren’t they all good sports!

here’s a closeup of the crown…

if you’d like to see more photos, or the supplies and directions for this project, you can view it here: PARTY LIKE IT’S 1912.

i wish you the very best of everything for 2012! happy new year!

school days layout…

i’d like to share my montly design team project for the CLEARSNAP BLOG with you…

I love school supplies, well, now I call them “office” supplies, but it’s the same thing: notebook paper, pens, paper clips, staplers, hole punches, and all the other little doo-dads you can find at the office supply stores. I also collect vintage supplies, those are my favorites!

So, when Hampton Art released their new stamp sets for Graphic 45′s ABC Primer collection, I just had to have them. My son’s 4th grade school photos gave me the perfect chance to use them. But the photo was a little on the “bright” side to say the least, so it was a bit of a challenge to bring in the vintage touches I like but balance them with the crisp, primary colors in the photo.

The first thing I reached for was my ColorBox Premium Dye Inks by Stephanie Barnard; they are bright, vivid and clear and would work well with the colors in the photo. The next things I gathered up were some school themed stamps; including the ABC Primer stamps. Black and kraft cardstocks would serve as a base; black to set off the photo and kraft to lend a vintage feel. Then I found a few patterned papers that would fit in with the layout. For embellishments, I noticed that some felt flowers by Epiphany Crafts matched perfectly with the background color of the photo. Baker’s twine in red and brown worked with the theme and colors as well.

Here’s how all these supplies came together…

The colors coordinate with the photo, but their style along with the stamps used, embellishment choices and the distressing, make it a little vintage too.

here are a few closeups of all the little details…

If you’d like all the directions on how you can create this layout yourself, just hop on over to the CLEARSNAP BLOG!
thanks for letting me share this project with you!

it’s a new year!

WOW! 2011, it is going to take me a LONG time to get used to writing that! Somehow it seems so much MORE futuristic than 2010, like i’ve gone 100 years ahead instead of only 1. not quite sure why it feels that way, but it does…

i hope everyone had a happy new year as they welcomed 2011 in!

i have been taking stock of several areas of my life and trying to shake off the dust, try some new things and get busy on projects – personal and professionally that have been on the “back burner” so long it’s wonder there is anything left in the pot! LOL!

i am still EXPECTANTLY waiting for my studio to be finished – that is a BIGGIE! there is NO telling what i’ll find when i go through my supplies to get them all organized and in their new homes! right now, installation has been suspended due to an unexpected problem we discovered with the plans for a corner desk. the designer hadn’t taken into consideration exactly HOW i was supposed to be able to access the upper cabinets when there was a triangular shaped desk sticking out a few feet from the wall! i am NOT six feet tall! LOL! so we had to rework the plans, make some changes and order more parts. it looks like i won’t be moving in anytime soon :(

one of the areas i’ve revamped are my classes at SCRAPBOOK 911. i’d received numerous requests for classes that i usually teach at night to be offered during the day and vice versa. i’ve reworked the schedule of my classes in order to make those requests happen. i’ve kept the days the same for my “regulars”, first and third mondays, but some of the times have changed and some of the classes had to be flip flopped, so be SURE you check out the changes! the “new” classes are money $aving $ketches RERUN and photoFULL RERUN. both of these classes will be the EXACT same class that was taught earlier in the month, just at a different time. so january money $aving $ketches RERUN on 1/24 will be a REPEAT of the class taught on 1/10. so plan to come to one or the other – but not BOTH!

you may notice that the dates for january and february are NOT the first and third mondays though, but that happens every year due to holidays landing near or on the first and third mondays of the month. on the months were that occurs, i move the dates to avoid the holidays.

i’ve put these classes on the january and february calendars on a TRIAL basis. i’m more than willing to teach these classes twice, as long as i’ve got enough people that want to take them. my fear is that intead of having 2 full classes, i’ll end up with 2 half full classes. so if you’ve been asking for these classes, or know someone who might like to take them, please come and please help spread the word.

mom & me classes will continue to offered on a monthly basis, but i have shortened the time of the class from 2 hours to 1 1/2 hours. the kids are getting MUCH faster now that some of them having been coming a year or so, and they are finishing their projects in record time. i keep trying to add new techniques or make the projects harder, but i don’t want them to be TOO challenging for those who are new to the class. i’ve also noticed that the kids start to get a little restless after about an hour, so maybe shortening the class will make it more enjoyable for them {and you parents!} i am also going to try to create small “bonus” projects for some of the classes that might be a little easier; so the kiddos will have something to do to fill the time if they finish early.

i’ve also been wanting to do more “guest teaching”, so i’ll be adding some retreat classes to my schedule, hopefully on a regular basis. i also plan on continuing to teach a few classes at Stamp Antonio once a quarter or so.

i also enjoyed teaching at CKC last year, and would like to do it again this coming year. that is still in the works though.

i am still blogging for Clearsnap too, and if you haven’t checked out the blog lately, please hop on over and take a look around. the blog has been revamped and the 2 separate blogs have been combined into one BIG one. there are also some guest designers and more events taking place. which all adds up to LOTS MORE PROJECTS and LOTS MORE INSPIRATION! Clearsnap also now has a Facebook page, so be sure to join up so you’ll be among the first to hear about events and contests!

a GREAT BIG thank you to all those who attended my classes this past year. i enjoy teaching, but in order to teach, you MUST have students! and i am fortunate to have some VERY loyal and VERY supportive students!

p.s.: and for those of you keeping track, i’ve just started YEAR THREE of the blog!

“smooched” ornaments…

i found some plain plaster ornaments and thought it would be fun to BLinG them up!

i knew Smooch Spritz and Smooch Accent Ink would be the perfect product to add the SpaRkle and SHimMer that i wanted. plus they are both very easy to use.

first i spritzed the plaster ornaments with Smooch Spritz to lay down a background color; i used Sun Kissed on the stocking, Limolicious on the tree and Mixed Berries for the ornament…

then, i used a heat gun to quickly set the Smooch Spritz, you could also just set them aside to dry for 10 or 15 minutes. the drying time will depend on the plaster. these ornaments were made of a VERY dense plaster and were buffed very smooth, so i decided to heat set them to speed things up.

then, i used Smooch Accent Inks to embellish them…

i used Pool,Taffy, Kiwi, Sassy Pink, Carrot and Grape Soda to color in the details on the ornaments, then used Moonlight and Tuxedo to add the highlights, stitching lines and outlines.

this would be a great project to do with the kids too! so if you are trying to figure out how to get some “quiet time” next week when they are out of school {or if the grandkids are visiting } give it a try!

please be sure to visit the NEW CLEARSNAP BLOG for lots of great projects; there are TONS of ideas for the holidays up! Clearsnap also has a NEW FACEBOOK PAGE, please join up and get all the info on new products, contests and more!
