when God closes a door…

it’s said he opens a window…

i probably should have been listening closer, i think God felt He needed to SLAM the door to get my attention!

the past few months have brought a lot of changes into my life, some good, some bad and a few that were very bad; there have been a WHOLE lot of highs and lows. and today has brought with it another drop in elevation…

i’m sure most of you “locals” have already heard the news — scrapbook 911 will be closing it’s doors next month. i began teaching there in February 6 years ago, so perhaps it is fitting that i will teach my final class there tomorrow, the last day of February.

i will miss the camaraderie that i found at scrapbook 911 as i was priviledged to make many new friendships and aquaintances over the years.

it’s always hard to say goodbye to things you know and love, but you can’t move onto new adventures until you bid the old ones adieu.

i am hopeful that there are bigger and brighter things on my horizon. i have a lot of ideas that i would love to see come to fruition, but up til now i have not had the time to dedicate to them. during the next few weeks, i’ll be trying to formulate a plan of action so to speak. some of the plans are already in motion as i had been preparing for the possibility of scrapbook 911 closing for awhile.

i have been working with Jane at The Scrapbooking Factory for a few months now, teaching classes at her monthly retreats. For those of you who enjoyed scrapbook 911′s retreats and will now be wondering where to go instead, i would encourage you to give one of Jane’s retreats a try. she puts them on monthly and does a FABULOUS job of taking care of everyone’s needs and providing a great place to spend a carefree weekend cropping. i fully expect her retreats to begin filling up VERY quickly, so please be sure to call her and sign up soon or contact her for more information if you are interested. she can be reached by e-mail by filling out this FORM or you can call her at 210-857-8697. her retreats are only $35.00 for the weekend! she is also hosting a special retreat at the rockin’ r in a few weeks. i am currently scheduled to teach classes at the rockin’r retreat in march, and at her april and may retreats.

The Scrapbooking Factory also has a very nice selection of printed papers, cardstock, embellies, ribbons, flowers and basic scrapbooking supplies. they are located at 6151 NW loop 410, inside Alamo Craft Co. They are open 10-6 everyday except Sunday. stop in and meet Jane, take a look around, and ask about classes or retreats, she’ll be glad to help you out!

i have also been teaching classes on a semi-quarterly basis at Stamp Antonio — mainly my altered book classes. i met with Amy and Carol last week, and they were gracious enough to agree to let me move my PhotoFULL and Money $aving $ketches there. we have set the date for both classes on thursday, april 7th. Money $aving $ketches will be held from 10:30 to 12:30 and PhotoFULL will be 6:00 to 8:00. Stamp Antonio normally closes at 6:00, so they are REALLY bending over backwards to accomodate this move by agreeing to stay open a little longer for us! i am hoping that the interest in these classes will be enough to sustain them at Stamp Antonio, at least for awhile. i would be VERY grateful to my faithful “regulars” if you would make this move WITH ME!

Stamp Antonio does not currently have a large enough selection of printed paper or cardstock to accomodate a “pick your own paper” class, so both classes will be “BYOP” – bring your own PAPER! since i have a month to prepare, all my march classes at scrapbook 911 will be cancelled, i will take the time to get samples for both classes ready in advance. that way, you will know EXACTLY how many printed papers and how many cardstocks you will need to bring. i’ll also be posting a snippet of the layouts on my blog. the cost of the classes will both be $8.00. Money $aving $ketches has been $8, so there is no change there, but since supplies will now NOT be included in the PhotoFULL class, it’s price will drop from $15 to $8 as well. so both will basically be “sketch” classes; i’ll provide you with the template, inspiration and ideas, and you’ll provide your own paper.

Stamp Antonio HAS expressed an interest in trying to cater to some of us “displaced” scrapbookers, so they may be able to expand their product selection over the next few months to help us out. if you haven’t been to Stamp Antonio, or haven’t been in for awhile, you might want to drop in and say “HI”. they have a wonderful NEW store at 1604 and Lockhill Selma {5139 north loop 1604 west}. in addition to a FABULOUS selection of stamps and inks, they have a lot of basics that we scrappers are going to need — like glue, adhesive, punches AND for you tim holtz junque-ies — LOTS of timmy products! if you don’t see what you need when you are there, PLEASE let them know – they DO want to be able to provide you with the goodies you need.

Stamp Antonio also has not one, but TWO great classrooms – one of which they just outfitted with a FABULOUS demo table with drop camera and big screen TV! no more trying to get a peek at what the instuctor is doing – you can see it on the BIG SCREEN! what a WONDERFULLY innovative idea!

Stamp Antonio is currently closed mondays, but drop by and see them any other day {call for hours}, or just dial them up if you’d like to see if they carry a product you need or for more info on classes, their number is 210-764-7900.

i have not yet made a decision about my mom & me classes, i will be sending out an e-mail to those on my class list to see what interest there is in continuing them. Stamp Antonio has expressed a desire in having kids classes taught there, so that may be a possibility.

please watch my blog for any new info on classes, retreats and with any luck – CROPS! i have many of your e-mail addresses, but i’m sure not all, so if you are interested in keeping up with any news via e-mail, please drop me a note with your e-mail addy so i can add you to my list.

i VERY MUCH appreciate all of you who have taken classes from me over the years. i am a bit melancholy to be closing the book on this particular chapter, but as you can see, i’ve been busy scripting some new ones!

thank you!

it’s a new year!

WOW! 2011, it is going to take me a LONG time to get used to writing that! Somehow it seems so much MORE futuristic than 2010, like i’ve gone 100 years ahead instead of only 1. not quite sure why it feels that way, but it does…

i hope everyone had a happy new year as they welcomed 2011 in!

i have been taking stock of several areas of my life and trying to shake off the dust, try some new things and get busy on projects – personal and professionally that have been on the “back burner” so long it’s wonder there is anything left in the pot! LOL!

i am still EXPECTANTLY waiting for my studio to be finished – that is a BIGGIE! there is NO telling what i’ll find when i go through my supplies to get them all organized and in their new homes! right now, installation has been suspended due to an unexpected problem we discovered with the plans for a corner desk. the designer hadn’t taken into consideration exactly HOW i was supposed to be able to access the upper cabinets when there was a triangular shaped desk sticking out a few feet from the wall! i am NOT six feet tall! LOL! so we had to rework the plans, make some changes and order more parts. it looks like i won’t be moving in anytime soon :(

one of the areas i’ve revamped are my classes at SCRAPBOOK 911. i’d received numerous requests for classes that i usually teach at night to be offered during the day and vice versa. i’ve reworked the schedule of my classes in order to make those requests happen. i’ve kept the days the same for my “regulars”, first and third mondays, but some of the times have changed and some of the classes had to be flip flopped, so be SURE you check out the changes! the “new” classes are money $aving $ketches RERUN and photoFULL RERUN. both of these classes will be the EXACT same class that was taught earlier in the month, just at a different time. so january money $aving $ketches RERUN on 1/24 will be a REPEAT of the class taught on 1/10. so plan to come to one or the other – but not BOTH!

you may notice that the dates for january and february are NOT the first and third mondays though, but that happens every year due to holidays landing near or on the first and third mondays of the month. on the months were that occurs, i move the dates to avoid the holidays.

i’ve put these classes on the january and february calendars on a TRIAL basis. i’m more than willing to teach these classes twice, as long as i’ve got enough people that want to take them. my fear is that intead of having 2 full classes, i’ll end up with 2 half full classes. so if you’ve been asking for these classes, or know someone who might like to take them, please come and please help spread the word.

mom & me classes will continue to offered on a monthly basis, but i have shortened the time of the class from 2 hours to 1 1/2 hours. the kids are getting MUCH faster now that some of them having been coming a year or so, and they are finishing their projects in record time. i keep trying to add new techniques or make the projects harder, but i don’t want them to be TOO challenging for those who are new to the class. i’ve also noticed that the kids start to get a little restless after about an hour, so maybe shortening the class will make it more enjoyable for them {and you parents!} i am also going to try to create small “bonus” projects for some of the classes that might be a little easier; so the kiddos will have something to do to fill the time if they finish early.

i’ve also been wanting to do more “guest teaching”, so i’ll be adding some retreat classes to my schedule, hopefully on a regular basis. i also plan on continuing to teach a few classes at Stamp Antonio once a quarter or so.

i also enjoyed teaching at CKC last year, and would like to do it again this coming year. that is still in the works though.

i am still blogging for Clearsnap too, and if you haven’t checked out the blog lately, please hop on over and take a look around. the blog has been revamped and the 2 separate blogs have been combined into one BIG one. there are also some guest designers and more events taking place. which all adds up to LOTS MORE PROJECTS and LOTS MORE INSPIRATION! Clearsnap also now has a Facebook page, so be sure to join up so you’ll be among the first to hear about events and contests!

a GREAT BIG thank you to all those who attended my classes this past year. i enjoy teaching, but in order to teach, you MUST have students! and i am fortunate to have some VERY loyal and VERY supportive students!

p.s.: and for those of you keeping track, i’ve just started YEAR THREE of the blog!

2011 calendar kits…

i have been putting together calendar kits at Scrapbook 911 for several years now, and usually have them done by october. obviously, it’s a LITTLE later than that now!

but, i decided to go ahead and put a few kits together anyway. so for those of you who have procrastinated and not started working on a 2011 calendar yet – you’re in LUCK!

and since we are now entering the busiest time of year for most of us, i’ve made the kit quick and easy to put together as well. in fact, it’s so easy a child can do it! so this is a perfect project to get the whole family involved in. almost everything is precut, so you just need to put it together in a few easy steps. each kit comes with complete directions and color photos. all you’ll need to add to the kit are your photos.

the calendar itself has large blocks so you can jot down info on each day, in addition to a “notes” section at the end of each month. there is also a LARGE pocket so you can tuck appointment cards, coupons and anything else you need to keep handy for the month.

this calendar would make a great gift for that hard to shop for person on your list.  the price of the kit is only 24.99 and includes the file folders, calendar pages, papers, embellishments, rings and ribbon hanger.

since i’m putting the calendar out SO late this year though, i only made a few kits, so quantites are limited, so get ‘em while you can!

here are some pics of the calendar…

and MORE new kits…

since i’m planning on taking december off {we’ll see how that goes!} i was trying to get things cleaned up and projects finished up so i could start with a clean slate for the new year. i KNOW it’s early to start thinking about 2011, but my philosophy is that once halloween has come and gone, you are on a STEEP, DOWNHILL slide to Christmas and New Years!

i had lots of bits and pieces leftover from classes and projects, so i decided to make MORE kits! i’ll be putting all 3 of these kits out at SCRAPBOOK 911 on monday…

cheap frills… $9.99 kit… “grateful” using papers and embellishments  from Teresa Collins’ Give Thanks line…

{page one of this layout has a pale ivory background that doesn’t show up too well in the scan}

another cheap frills… $9.99 kit… “scarecrow” using papers and embellishments from Bella BLVD’s One Fall Day line…

and, last but not least, “birthday star” using papers and embellishments from Teresa Collins’ Celebrate line…

{the kit is $12.99 and comes in 2 versions, kids and adults; the tags are different. the kid version is shown}

here are the tags that are included in the adult version of the kit…

and, there were still a few of the “blessed house” wall decor kits left; which are nice to display any time of the year and could be a thoughtful gift idea…

if you aren’t in san antonio, Scrapbook 911 does ship. so if you ever see any kits or class projects posted here that you are interested in, just e-mail me, or give SCRAPBOOK 911 a call.

all of the kits, and most of my class projects {except altered books and a few others} include full color photos and complete directions. and the pieces are pretty much all precut too, which means they are quick and easy to put together.

i still have MORE goodies in my “kit” stash, so there may be a few more kits posted before the month is out!

new mom and me class…

a new mom and me class has been added to the class calendar at scrapbook 911…

the HAUNTED HOUSE mini book class will be held on satuday, october 23 from 10:30 to 12:30…

the sample is up at the store so you can stop by and see it. while there, you can also take a sneak peek at the november mom & me project! {more on that later}

THIS saturday, september 11, we’ll be making a set of 6 cards  in the mom & me class. 5 are all designed and precut so all the kiddos have to do is stamp a few elements and put the cards together. the last card is one the kids get to design themselves using the free stamp included with the class.  they’ll be SO proud to send cards they made themselves {envelopes are included so they’ll just need stamps}! the class will run from 10:30 to 12:30 and the cost is just $14.oo.

there is still space in this saturday’s card class so it’s not too late to sign up. please call SCRAPBOOK 911 at 210-492-1984 to get your name on the list if you are interested in either of these classes.

auction!

SCRAPBOOK 911 is having an auction to benefit GUIDE DOGS OF TEXAS

staff, instructors and customers have donated handmade items to be auctioned off by silent auction with all proceeds to be donated to Guide Dogs of Texas.

the auction will officially kick off this weekend during the annual “Shirley” crop. but some of the items are already out and getting bids!

there are some pretty terrific items, several mini books, some great Christmas items, and i also noticed several pieces of jewelry.

i made a “dates to remember” book as my donation…

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

there is a page for each month that you can list all your important dates on: birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

then there are pages for notes for each month, you can list gift ideas, shopping lists, or any other notes that would be helpful. each set of note pages also doubles as a pocket. so you have a handy place to tuck any receipts, or business cards, or any other info that you need to keep handy.

the book uses papers from Graphic 45′s new Steampunk Debutante line and from Teresa Collin’s new Giving Thanks line.

So make sure you go by the store soon to check out all the auction items and to bid on any that catch your eye. i also heard that jennie would be listing the auction items on the web, so you may be able to bid that way as well. check the Scrapbook 911 blog for details on that.

—and REMEMBER, the proceeds benefit the Guide Dogs of Texas, a VERY worthy organization so PLEASE bid generously! {and you can take it as a tax deduction :)}

new class!

i have just added a brand new class to the calendar at SCRAPBOOK 911…

here are some photos of my “countdown to Christmas shadowbox”…

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

who doesn’t get excited about Christmas? who doesn’t count the days til it’s time to open all the gifts? this calendar will make it easy to keep track of the days; just move the little mini Christmas tree from window to window to count down the days.

inks, stamps, paint, vintage goodies and papers & embellies by Teresa Collins have all been used to create this project.

start a new tradition at your house, or continue to celebrate the “countdown” tradition with a new calendar this year. you’ll be proud to show off this Christmas project year after year.

the class is scheduled for saturday, october 23 from 1:00 to 5:30. space is very limited due to limited supplies, so please call SCRAPBOOK 911 to sign up or for more info.

i’ll be teaching my MONEY $AVING $KETCHES class at SCRAPBOOK 911 tomorrow morning from 10:00 to 1:00. for those unfamiliar with this class, it is geared to S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G your scrapbook supplies so you can get the most out of them! we’ll make a 2-page layout, then use the leftover supplies to make ANOTHER 2-page layout! the class includes BOTH sketches as well as all the directions you need to make them for only $8. you can bring supplies from home to create your layouts with, or you can purchase supplies at Scrapbook 911. this class is a GREAT way to get 2-2 page layouts done QUICKLY and inexpensively. this class is offered every month, so if you can’t make it this time, try again next month.

i’ve also put a new kit together, it will be available at Scrapbook 911 tomorrow morning…

happy birthday mom!

my mom’s birthday was this week…

i had no idea what to get her though. when i was younger, birthdays were SO exciting, the list of things i wanted was HUGE! now, most b-days i can’t think of too many things i actually need. and UGGH – when did birthdays start being about things i NEED instead of about things i WANT! but, i guess as you get older {DOUBLE UUUGGH} you realize that you actually have to find a home in your home for stuff, so you better make sure you NEED it! LOL! mom’s been at that point for awhile, there isn’t much she needs, and i can only come up with so many ideas for “practical” and “useful” gifts. SO, this year, i decided to just give a gift from the heart.

i was INSPIRED by the new Teresa Collins lines that Scrapbook 911 got in. i was at the store over the weekend for a retreat, so i thought about making mom a mini album for her b-day. i wanted it to be more of a “card”, not something with pics, just journaling. Things you think about but don’t always put into words. i wanted her to READ and KNOW how wonderful her family thinks she is.

So i started with papers from the Celebrate line, then added some black and white patterned papers from Noel and Giving Thanks. i like mixing bright, vivid printed papers with black and white patterns. it grounds them and gives the bold shades something to “bounce” off of.

here’s a slideshow of the album, complete with closeups of the embellies…

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

i had so much fun putting this album together for my mom that i decided to make another one for a friend. i’ll be sharing it in a few days, so check back {hint – think pink and girlie-girl!}
