Grande Dame

I’d like to share a project with you today…

This project is very special to me because it celebrates the life of my Grandmother, Merle Virginia focusing on my favorite picture of her, which was taken in the early 1920’s.

My Gram lived to be 101 years old and held on to her wish to be able to stay in her own home til the end, she was one tough lady.

She used to tell me stories about her mother playing the organ and piano to accompany the silent movies in the theatre, so that was the inspiration for the piece.

This altered frame incorporates papers from Graphic 45, stamps and Spritz Screens from Hampton Arts featuring G45 designs and LOTS of Clearsnap products. Also included are bits and pieces of vintage “junque” that I have accumulated through trips to flea markets and estate sales.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The base of the project is an MDF frame which was flat on the front and resembled a shadowbox on the back. I thought the back was much more interesting than the front, so I used the backside of the frame to build this piece.

If you have someone who is close to your heart that you would like to honor with a similar project, here are s few tips:

  • start by listing things that were unique to them
  • gather memorabilia, cards or letters, and vintage bits that relate to them
  • decide on a color scheme and gather papers, inks and embellishments in those colors
  • select stamps to use as backgrounds and accents that will compliment your project
  • CREATE!

The “create” part should be the enjoyable part, give yourself permission to play and experiment. Relax and let the memories of your special someone inspire you.

Here is a list of Clearsnap products that were used to create my project:

Smooch Spritz: Log Cabin, Gold Glow, Caramel Latte, Tea Party and Vanilla Shimmer

Smooch: Shabby Pink, Mocha, Lettuce, Banana Custard, Snickerdoodle, Moonlight, Silver Fox, Olive Twist, Gold Lame’ and Taffy

ColorBox Archival Dye Ink: Mudslide, Cookie Dough, Putty and Mermaid

ColorBox Fluid Chalk Ink: Chestnut Roan

ColorBox Pigment Ink: Dragonfly Black

Fairy Dust Glitter: Pralines & Cream

Top Boss Embossing Powder: Opalescent Clear

Glue Gloss

july photoFULL and money $aving $ketches classes…

i’ve finished the samples for july’s photoFULL and money $aving $ketches class…

i hope you have LOTS of photos ready to scrap! this month’s M$$ class may become one of my favorites; it’s quick and easy to cut,  uses almost EVERY bit of the paper AND has room for lots of photos. and this month’s photoFULL features a new design using some of the easy to attach flips that we’ve done in the past. {NO cutting required for the page protectors} is really photoFULL on STEROIDS! LOL! i actually did NOT have enough photos to put on this layout. it holds 25+ and i MEAN that! bring you BIG sets of photos and come ready to SCRAP!

starting in july, i’ll be teaching these classes at TWO locations. the classes will be the same – so don’t think you need to come to both!

i’ll be at Stamp Antonio on thursday, july 7th. money $aving $ketches will be from 10-12 and photoFULL will be from 6-8. then on tuesday, july 26, i’ll be at Scrapbook N’ More in new braunfels. both classes at Scrapbook N’ More will be taught in the daytime – PhotoFULL from 10-12 and M$$ from 1-3.

remember you get to select YOUR own paper for these classes, so only the PLACEMENT of pieces will be the same, but heres’s snippets of the layouts for both classes…

you can call the stores to sign up or for more info:

new “dog” lines from Reminisce…

REMINISCE has released THREE brand new pup related lines…

all three are dog-gone cute you’ll want to check them out!

first is LITTLE BUDDIES, adorable little puppies frolick on the papers and embellishments in shades of soft blues, tans and a few other pastels. this line would work great with baby or toddler pics of your kiddos with their puppies, or just of the puppies themselves! a nice “baby” line for dogs!

next is WHO’S MY BFF? a cartoony little pup is featured on these papers in a pallete of muted blues with some bright pops of color. adorable and colorful embellishments really pop off the papers.

and finally DOG PARK, a bright and fun line with vivid greens set off with blues, tans and browns features a parade of pups! trees, paws, stripes, patterns and pups! this is a great line for scrapping your doggie pics whether or not they were taken in a dog park.

laura e. was nice enough to lend me some pics of her pup “lucy jane” that were taken in a park. a PEOPLE park! but the line worked just fine. so don’t worry if you don’t have any actual DOG park photos!

here’s the frame i altered using mainly the DOG PARK line, with touches of papers from the other 2 lines…

the design team has posted their projects on the REMINISCE BLOG, so if you have pics of your pup you need to scrap, you might want to take a peek!

tfl!

class news…

i’ve updated my class calendar thru july and there are several new additions!

first, due to the great response to the daytime classes i taught at SCRAPBOOK n’ MORE up in new braunfels today, i’ve gone ahead and scheduled them again for next month. so i’ll be teaching both photoFULL and money $aving $ketches there on tuesday, july 26. thanks to all who attended those classes today! if attendence keeps up and the classes show some signs of growth, i’ll continue to schedule them monthly.

for now, the classes will be the same designs and layouts that will be taught at STAMP ANTONIO at the top of the month. so if for some reason you can’t make the classes at Stamp Antonio, you might consider signing up for them at Scrapbook n’ More.

i have also been considering adding an afternoon photoFULL to the line up at Stamp Antonio, but i’ll probably wait until september to make that decision.

i also scheduled a decor class at Scrapbook n’ More as part of their “Christmas in July” series…

JOY wall decor hanging…

the project has lots of little goodies and vintage junque! it is a great way to display years of photos of your kids under the tree or on santa’s knee. ephemera is by GECKO GALZ. the price is $28, and the class will be on sat. july 30 from 10-12:30.

and one last note about classes at Scrapbook n’ More, i’ll be teaching 2 jewelry classes there next week on tuesday, june 28. they will be from 10:00 to 1:00 so if you have some down time during the day, come out and play! i don’t usually schedule project classes for either during the week or during the day. so take advantage if you are interested. there will be 2 projects offered, a pendant and a charm bracelet. since the techniques are similar, they will be taught together. but each project is priced individually; so if you only want to take one you can.

here’s what we’ll be making…

i’ve also added 2 new classes to the SCRAPBOOK STUDIO schedule…

on sat. jul 2 from 10-12, we’ll be making an altered frame embellished with some gorgeously shabby papers from the girls paperie

and then the next saturday, july 9, from 10-6, charlotte and i will be hosting the first of what we hope will be monthly crops: MAKE & TAKE CROP…

make & take crop:

come and crop as long as you’d
like between the hours of 10:00 am and 6:00 pm

 receive TWO free one page make & take layouts {second “completer” page kits will be available}

 specials and/or sales on page
kits throughout the day

 $5.00 fee

the crop alone is a good deal at only $5, but with 2 FREE 1 page layouts, we are hoping you will think it’s a GREAT deal!

space is very limited, so please sign up early if you’d like to attend.

i won’t be teaching at ckc san marcos this year because they had NO class space left! LOTS of great classes are being offered; i’ve signed up for several!

and, i think that brings everthing up to date.

thanks!

p.s.: i added TWO new kits to Scrapbook Studio today too!

Scrapbook Studio Classes…

i wanted to post a reminder about my classes at Scrapbook Studio

the disney altered book class is scheduled for this saturday, june 11…

but as of right now, only one person has signed up and i may have to reschedule it. if you were interested in taking this class, please call Craftiques to sign up. i’ll make the decision about rescheduling tomorrow around noon.

i also have a mom & me class scheduled for wednesday, june 15…

i know there was a lot of interest in getting this class going again, but i’m not sure how much everyone’s “summer plans” will affect attendence.

you can call Craftiques at 210-541-9960 to sign up or to get more information about either of these classes.

thanks!

unpaid endorsement…

i recently had a very positive experience with IRIS; the company that makes numerous types of storage containers, including those for scrapbooking…

i had purchased an Iris Extra Large Photo Photo Keeper to pack and carry my unscrapped photos in to take to crops. and i was VERY happy with it. 16 individual photo cases fit into the container, and each photo case holds about 100 photos – so LOTS of storage. plus it was easy to label the cases and to reach in and grab a set of photos to match papers to. very compact, very convenient… until it BROKE!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

i was packing my supplies into my car after a crop and when i went to lift in the photo keeper, i was left holding just the handle as i watched the container fall and bounce on the ground! it broke almost in half!

i tossed it into the car to deal with later, not at all happy about it breaking since it was not an inexpensive item – although i’m not saying it was pricey.  when i got home, i got it out to take a closer look and noticed that one side of the handle looked like it was defective – either it came that way, or part of the handle had broken off.

figuring i had nothing to lose, i sent the company an e-mail about the situation. i was pleasantly surprised to receive a prompt reply from “bev” at iris. she asked if i could send photos of the damage so she could take a look. so i snapped the pics you see above and sent them off. and again received a prompt reply back requesting my address so a replacement could be sent. “bev” said that it did look like the handle was defective. she also stated that iris does indeed stand behind their products and also guarantees them to be free of defects.

i let her know how much i appreciated a company that not only guaranteed their products, but did so quickly and easily. no hoops to jump through, postage to pay, product to return – in short all the “hassles” companies impose so that most of us just never bother to do all the work involved to get a replacement or refund.

and today, less than 10 days since my first e-mail to iris, a replacement container was delivered to my door.

so i just wanted to share this experince with you and pass along the info for any of you who own iris storage containers or were contemplating purchasing some.
